Aluminium is an exceptionally useful and versatile metal for planter manufacture.
All our aluminium manufacture is to-order and to your specification, and we do not hold in stock a standard range of shapes and sizes.
Aluminium planters can be supplied ‘raw’ (without any external paint or coating), and they will survive outdoors for decades without maintenance. Aluminium naturally develops a protective layer of aluminium oxide; and this layer adheres strongly to the parent metal, and will repair itself immediately if damaged mechanically. In a coastal environment, aluminium planters will outperform powder-coated steel, and will not display the surface staining [aka ‘tea staining’] sometimes evident with stainless steel.
The look of raw, naturally weathered aluminium is flat and light grey, and often it becomes pitted over time – a hard, architectural aesthetic, that can work well in many modern design settings.
If a more refined look is required, then aluminium planters can be supplied powder coated, exactly as for steel, which can be either:
- a clear lacquer powder coat, which will stop the aluminium weathering
- a coloured powder coat, or
- one of the many specialist powder coat finishes available
Powder coated aluminium and steel look, and perform, essentially the same; but aluminium has a much higher strength:weight ratio than steel, and thus aluminium planters would typically be preferred where weight is an issue. Aluminium also will not corrode if the surface paint finish is scratched through to bare metal. Thus, for heavily-trafficked areas, the additional cost of powder coated aluminium over steel can be justified, if a long Design Life Performance is desired.
IOTA custom-manufactures aluminium planters in the UK, in any shape or size, from simple geometric shapes to complex architectural designs. CAD models can also be generated for approval against a design brief.
