Brentford Market Square, Greater London TW8

Information

Large corten steel planters to green the Market Square in Brentford were supplied to Air Quality Brentford, a voluntary group of Brentford residents, trying to improve the air quality locally.  The project is part of their #MakeBrentfordGreener campaign in association with London National Park City, and was made possible by funding from Hounslow Council.

Two sizes of cylindrical planters in Corten steel were commissioned (Dia.1200 and Dia.1000mm), with forklift channels so that they could be easily moved for access to the high street. To accommodate the gradient in some areas, planters also had adjustable feet.  As a bright accent, and mirroring the cylinder shape, a Boulevard Delta Round planter custom coloured to RAL 1003 Signal yellow was included.

The planters were delivered just as lockdown eased, and a team of volunteers gave up their Saturday to take in the delivery and plant up.  A spokesperson from Air Quality Brentford said "Huge thanks go out to all of the volunteers who helped on the day, there was an enormous amount of work involved and many hands really made the task lighter. One team of people filled cars and vans with 120 bags of soil sourced from a resident’s garden, plus over 100 plants, and another team unloaded everything at the Market Square end. With gardening gloves, trowels, sun cream and protective face masks at the ready, we were finally able to complete the community planting project for Brentford Market Square, two years after applying for funding".
