IOTA was commissioned to supply large tree and shrub planters to Coal Drops Yard, at the heart of the King's Cross urban regeneration zone.
This was a substantial project, with 43nr. planters in total, in a wide variety of different designs. The many design variations demonstrate how planters can support much wider landscape scheme objectives than the simply horticultural:
• the addition of FSC Iroko benching and arm rests
• planters shaped to falls, and including adjustable feet
• planters designed to be movable via fork lift
• vinyl decal signage to support wayfinding objectives
All planters were manufactured from 3.0mm 1.4003 Stainless Steel, and most were polyester powder coated [PPC] to RAL 8022 [Black brown]. The PPC formulation recommended by IOTA was Interpon’s D1036 Textura product, which is particularly robust and forgiving in public realm. Some planters were also painted to Akzo Nobel's D2525 Anodic Bronze finish.
Once the epicentre of the UK’s coal industry and later the city’s thriving nightclub scene, Coal Drops Yard is an iconic space in the heart of London. A key site in the regeneration of the King’s Cross area, it was redesigned by Thomas Heatherwick and opened to the public as a new retail concept in 2018.
