IOTA supplied large metal tree planters to the newly-built Uig Ferry Terminal on the Isle of Skye.
For this project, the client wanted a painted finish, but the environment could hardly be more hostile for a metal planter. So the only option was to powder coat onto 316-grade [aka ‘Marine-grade’] stainless steel. Given the cost, this material option is rarely specified, but it can be the right answer in certain situations – as discussed here: High-grade Stainless Steels – Powder Coated.
The planters were designed to be movable via forklift, and they included adjustable feet to mitigate uneven ground and falls – specification decisions which are further discussed in these articles in our Specifiers Area:
Moving Planters with Pallet Trucks or Fork Lifts
Planters on Sloping or Uneven Ground
The Uig Ferry Terminal on the Trotternish Peninsula in northern Skye is the primary gateway connecting the Isle of Skye to the Outer Hebrides. Operated by CalMac, the port runs vital daily vehicle and passenger routes to Tarbert (Harris) and Lochmaddy (North Uist).
In 2025, Robertson Construction Northern constructed a new ferry terminal building in a project jointly funded by Transport Scotland and The Highland Council. The works were designed by the Highland Council’s Property Team.
